Adaptations of organisms

Plant: acacia tree

Adaptations: the acacia tree has developed an adaptation that allows the tree to grow quickly (has developed long tap roots that can reach ground water sources and is fire resistant)

Animal: gazelle

Adaptations: food is scarce for the gazelle and it uses its hind legs to obtain leaves. It is also capable of going long times without water and can get water from the plants they eat

Limiting factors that keep populations in check

Plant: Rhodes Grass

  • not enough water (a)
  • wildfires (a)
  • animal grazing (b)
  • human settlement(b)

Animal: Giraffe

  • human hunting(b)
  • predetation of lions (b)
  • enviornmental temperature (a)
  • health and salinity of giraffe (a)

Many relationships are needed for a stable envirornment

Predator: a consumer who captures and eats other consumers

Prey: a consumer who is captured and eaten by another consumer

  • Like a lion to a zebra, the female lion hunts and kills the zebra for food

Mutualism: a symbiotic relationship in which both species benifit

  • Like a relationship between an acacia tree and ants, the tree provides a home for the ants and ants will protect trees from predators

Commensalism: a relationship in which in which both species benifit

  • like cattle and cattle egrets, cattle graze on grass and disturb insects and the egrets eat the bugs. Both benifit from a food source

Parasitism: a symbiotic relationship in which one organism benifits and the other is harmed

  • like a brown headed cowbird, they are a brood parasite and lay their eggs in nests of other bird species so they can raise their young

Heterotrophs and deomposers that occupy the savanna

Giraffe

Zebra

Elephant

Lion

Hyena

Leopard

Saprobe: Termite; a decomposer

There are numerous flora that occupy the savannas

Lemmon Grass -a tropical plant with long, slender blades that can be used for cooking

Rhodes Grass -useful forage for pasture and hay and is drought-resistant

Abal -one of the few shrubby plants that exist, fresh flowers can be eaten from it

Umbrella Thorn Acacia -classic, umbrella-shaped canopy associated with thorn trees

Rasin Bush - wild raisin consistently bears heavy crops of fruit
